Prevention and Hygiene

To enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile, it is essential to regularly maintain basic oral hygiene. This goes far beyond the routine of brushing your teeth three times a day or after every meal. Modern dental prevention focuses on preventing serious diseases of the teeth and periodontium and is a fundamental element in the treatment of caries and periodontitis. Effective prevention and hygiene involve a multi-faceted approach, including education, reinforcing proper hygiene habits, regular check-ups, and preventive treatments tailored to the patient’s age and specific needs. This approach helps achieve excellent results — a healthy and beautiful smile.

As part of a comprehensive prevention and hygiene program, Royal Dent offers:

Dental Check-ups

For patients visiting Royal Dent for the first time, we provide a thorough dental examination. Each patient receives an individualized prevention and hygiene plan. During the initial visit, we conduct a detailed medical history, dental examination, and provide instructions on proper brushing and flossing techniques. Upon request, we perform professional cleaning treatments such as scaling (removal of tartar), air polishing, and fluoride application. Hygiene treatments are essential for an accurate assessment of oral health and to determine further treatment needs.

Scaling – Removal of Dental Calculus

Dental plaque is an enemy to both teeth and gums. If left untreated, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which can lead to periodontitis, gum disease, and eventually tooth loosening and loss. To prevent this, regular hygiene treatments (every six months) involving the removal of tartar and plaque are recommended. Ultrasonic scalers are used for thorough cleaning. Since tartar is a hard, mineralized layer of plaque, it cannot be removed through daily oral hygiene alone. Professional tartar removal at Royal Dent with an ultrasonic scaler breaks up the calculus, which then easily flakes off the tooth surface. This procedure is completely safe and does not damage the enamel, as the tartar is shattered rather than scraped off.

Air Polishing (Plaque Removal)

Air polishing removes plaque and surface stains from teeth, especially from hard-to-reach areas such as interdental spaces and grooves. Stains often result from coffee, tea, or tobacco use. The procedure uses a dental air polisher, which sprays a high-pressure stream of dental powder, water, and air, effectively removing deposits and discolorations. This treatment is safe and painless. After tartar and plaque removal, teeth are polished using specialized brushes, rubber cups, and pastes. Polished teeth surfaces resist plaque buildup, helping them remain smooth and shiny longer. When combined with regular daily brushing, plaque and tartar are less likely to reaccumulate quickly. After cleaning, teeth are protected with a fluoride preparation.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride application is a preventive treatment aimed at strengthening tooth enamel and increasing its resistance to decay. This treatment involves applying a concentrated fluoride dose immediately after teeth cleaning, which enhances fluoride absorption into the enamel. Fluoride is applied in the form of pleasant-tasting foams. The mineral components of fluoride penetrate microscopic enamel defects, rebuilding and reinforcing enamel structure. Teeth gain protection against harmful acids produced by oral bacteria. Additionally, enamel remineralization slows down the decay process and helps maintain healthy teeth over the long term.

Fissure Sealing

Fissure sealing is recommended primarily for young patients whose molars or premolars have grooves that have not yet been affected by decay. The sealant protects these grooves from harmful external factors such as sugar. Sealing should be performed soon after the full chewing surface erupts. Before the procedure, the area is carefully cleaned, preferably with an air polisher. The cleaned and dried surfaces are checked for caries. After thorough preparation, the sealant is applied precisely into every groove and cured under a special light for about 40 seconds. Sealants are checked every six months to ensure their condition.

Hygiene Instructions

During the visit, patients receive personalized oral hygiene guidance. Professional plaque and tartar removal is recommended every six months. An important part of preventing dental and gum diseases is proper and consistent tooth brushing. Our specialists help select the right toothbrush and toothpaste for each patient. Brushing removes plaque and food debris from the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of teeth. However, cleaning interdental spaces is crucial, as bacteria often accumulate there, leading to inflammation and decay. Dental floss helps clean these contact points, promoting freshness and cleanliness. Mouth rinses, tailored to patient needs, are also part of comprehensive oral hygiene and are used after brushing.
